The United States Supreme Court recently ruled that non-unanimous juries are unconstitutional, reports The Oregonian. Oregon had been the sole state to allow split-verdict juries in the majority of felony trials, and the practice persisted in Louisiana until 2018. Opponents of non-unanimous jury verdicts have argued that the practice is rooted in racial discrimination, and the six justices assenting to the Court’s decision agreed.
